The Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon. Governs Kwame Agbodza, has raised alarm over the deteriorating road conditions in the Western Region, with particular focus on the Takoradi-Agona Nkwanta stretch.
While inspecting the ongoing 23-kilometre dualisation project, the Minister stressed the urgent need for Ghana to shift from road-based to rail-based transportation, especially for industries like mining that rely heavily on transporting bulk materials.
Agbodza expressed concern that the current state of roads in the region, crucial to the nation’s economic growth, is being rapidly worsened by the constant use of heavy-duty trucks.
He pointed out that such operations, particularly in the extractive sector, cannot sustainably rely on roads for transporting materials over long distances.
“There is no country that successfully undertakes mining and other extractive activities using roads to transport bulk materials over 50, 60, or 100 kilometers. Mining is about rail. Using our tax-funded roads for such heavy-duty operations is unsustainable,” the Minister explained.
While addressing the issue, Agbodza commended Justmoh Construction Limited for their dedication to the road project, even though they had not yet received government payment.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting Ghanaian-owned construction companies, underscoring the importance of encouraging and aiding local firms like Justmoh, which are vital for the nation’s growth.
Dr. Justice Amoh, CEO of Justmoh Construction, appealed for public patience and called on the government to settle outstanding debts owed to the company, to ensure the continued progress of construction projects.
