Former National Youth Organizer aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Michael Osei Boateng, widely known as “Pope,” has called for an urgent amendment of the party’s constitution to allow all card-carrying members to participate in voting.
Speaking on a local radio station, Osei Boateng emphasized the importance of ensuring that every member has a voice in the party’s decision-making processes.
He proposed that the NPP open its internal election system to all members, not just delegates, enabling a more inclusive approach to the party’s leadership choices.
Concerns on Parliamentary Results:
Osei Boateng also expressed his shock at the parliamentary election results, which saw the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) win a majority of 188 seats in Ghana’s Parliament.
He stated that even the NDC had anticipated that the NPP would secure the majority, but the unexpected outcome left him puzzled.
He questioned how the NPP, which had worked tirelessly to secure the majority in Parliament, ended up with only 88 seats in the 9th Parliament. “Our candidates worked so hard to help secure majority seats, but the reverse is the case,” Pope lamented.
Solutions for NPP’s Electoral Defeat:
Reflecting on the NPP’s defeat, Osei Boateng pointed to multiple factors, particularly how the party handled its internal elections.
He noted that following the NPP’s loss in the 2008 elections, the party opened up its delegates system, but after winning the 2017 elections, the same openness was not carried through.
He suggested that to counter the monetization of the system, the NPP should revise its delegates’ approach and allow all card-bearing members to vote in internal elections.
This, he said, would enhance decision-making and strengthen the party’s structure.
“I understand that the Prof. Mike Ocquaye review committee is working on its recommendations, but as an active member of the NPP, I believe we can restructure the delegates system to a point where it can also be used strategically for national elections,” Osei Boateng concluded, expressing his belief that a more inclusive and transparent process could help the party assess its strengths at the polling station level and plan more effectively for future elections.
