Human Resource (HR) professionals in Ghana are being called upon to advocate for increased investment in employee mental health initiatives.
Dr. Kojo Boafo Obeng, Hospital Director at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, highlighted the importance of prioritizing mental well-being in the workplace.
He emphasized the need for new strategies, including the integration of Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) machines with EEG technology, to improve treatment efficiency, especially for vulnerable groups.
“We need to prioritize mental health at our workplaces because it’s very key to ensure sustainability,” Dr. Obeng stressed.
KGL Foundation Steps Up with Donations and Digital Initiatives
The article also recognizes the KGL Foundation’s contributions towards improving mental healthcare in Ghana. During a recent donation ceremony, the foundation pledged to:
- Donate GHS 500,000 to install solar panels and renovate hospital units.
- Create a dedicated space to position the Accra Psychiatric Hospital as a leading mental health center.
- Promote the Mental Health Index (MHI), a digital platform launched in 2023 to raise awareness and provide resources on mental health.
The MHI has already been piloted in schools and offers self-help activities through its website. Dr. Obeng encouraged the foundation to develop a mobile app to cater to younger generations who prefer app-based access.
This combined effort from HR professionals and organizations like the KGL Foundation highlights a growing focus on improving mental health awareness and treatment options in Ghana.
