The Ghana Police Service has pledged unwavering commitment to safeguarding journalists during the 2024 General Elections.
Speaking at a stakeholder meeting on November 20, 2024, at the Police Headquarters in Accra, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, emphasized the vital role of the media in Ghana’s democratic process.
He assured senior journalists and editors present that the Police are determined to ensure their security as they fulfill their duties as the fourth estate.
To strengthen collaboration, the Police introduced liaison officers for all media houses nationwide, serving as direct links between the Police and media organizations to address security concerns effectively.
Additionally, a dedicated toll-free contact has been established to facilitate information sharing with the public.
Dr. Dampare lauded Ghana’s democratic reputation, attributing its success to the synergy between institutions like the Police and the media.
He urged journalists to uphold accuracy and resist misinformation, which could jeopardize national stability.
With these measures in place, the IGP expressed confidence in fostering a peaceful and secure electoral environment while highlighting the collective responsibility of all stakeholders to make the 2024 elections a historic moment of democratic excellence.
