Story Highlights
  • Manasseh Azure ranks Kwabena Agyepong as his second choice for NPP flagbearer after Dr. Bawumia
  • Agyepong earns praise for championing constitutional reforms within the NPP
  • With Mahama out in 2028, Manasseh is closely watching both NPP and NDC leadership choices

Renowned investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has publicly expressed his interest in the political direction of Ghana ahead of the 2028 general elections.

While clarifying that he is not neutral, Manasseh emphasized that his political support will be influenced heavily by who leads the two main parties—NDC and NPP—heading into the next election cycle.

In a recent Facebook post, Manasseh explained that, with President John Mahama expected to end his tenure in 2028 and internal uncertainties surrounding his successor within the NDC, the party’s future direction remains unclear and uninspiring to him.

He hinted at the high possibility of governance challenges by the current administration, stating, “High are the chances that the government will mess up at some point.”

Given these dynamics, Manasseh says he is paying close attention to who the NPP elects as its next flagbearer, as that individual may well win his vote if the NDC fails to present a compelling candidate.

Among the potential contenders within the NPP, he noted Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his top pick, saying Bawumia “stands out by miles” among the options.

However, he was quick to add that his second preference is Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a respected voice within the party and a former General Secretary.

In a related development, Ing. Kwabena Agyepong has been in the news following the near-unanimous adoption of his constitutional reform proposals by the NPP’s National Executive Committee and National Council.

Ing. Kwabena Agyepong has long advocated for reforms that aim to make the party more inclusive and democratically grounded. In a public statement, he expressed deep gratitude to the party’s leadership for supporting these significant changes.

Nonetheless, Ing. Kwabena Agyepong also made a passionate appeal to delegates ahead of the party’s upcoming Annual Conference, urging them to reconsider some aspects of the National Council’s recent decisions on constitutional reforms.

His continued advocacy signals a strong commitment to internal democracy and integrity—values he believes are essential for the party’s renewal and electoral appeal in 2028.

With endorsements like that of Manasseh Azure Awuni and a growing reputation as a reformist within the party, Ing. Kwabena Agyepong is increasingly positioning himself as a serious contender in the NPP’s future leadership race.
