President John Dramani Mahama has announced that privatizing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) may be considered as a key strategy to address the persistent challenges within the nation’s power distribution system.

In a meeting with a World Bank delegation on January 8, 2025, Mahama discussed the potential benefits of involving the private sector to address inefficiencies, financial mismanagement, and poor service delivery at ECG. He stressed that privatization could be part of a broader initiative aimed at modernizing and improving the overall energy sector.

Reflecting on Ghana’s participation in the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact during his vice presidency, Mahama underscored the crucial role of efficient energy distribution in driving national development. He emphasized that any move toward privatization would be carefully considered, ensuring that the public interest remains central while striving for enhanced performance and sustainability in the energy sector.

Mahama reiterated the need for comprehensive consultations with key stakeholders, including the World Bank, to ensure any privatization efforts align with Ghana’s long-term energy goals.
