John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, has raised alarm over the resurgence of violence during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) tenure, particularly following recent chieftaincy conflicts in Bawku.
The situation escalated with the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile, leading to at least two fatalities and multiple injuries.
During a campaign rally in Saboba on October 28, Mahama called on all parties involved to show restraint and avoid provoking violence. He highlighted the necessity of dialogue to resolve the ongoing issues and pledged to restore peace in Bawku if elected.
“Peace is essential for progress. Unfortunately, disturbances in Ghana often coincide with the NPP’s governance. I have been hearing concerning reports from Bawku that threaten the region’s peace.
“I appeal to the people of Bawku and all stakeholders to remain patient and refrain from conflict. There are malicious forces trying to inflame ethnic tensions. Please, stay calm and resist any urge to resort to violence. When the NDC comes to power, we will ensure peace in Bawku and surrounding areas.
“The most dangerous individual is one who is inconsistent and untrustworthy. Let us work together to ensure a peaceful resolution.”
