Mahama to Ghana Bar Association: Hold My Government Accountable

President encourages legal body to hold his administration accountable for better governance

President John Dramani Mahama has urged the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to hold his government accountable by actively scrutinizing and critiquing its policies, emphasizing that constructive criticism is vital for national progress.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by GBA leader Efua Ghartey on Wednesday, March 26, Mahama highlighted the crucial role of civil society organizations in governance.

He stressed that democracy thrives when institutions like the GBA freely voice concerns over government actions.

“You have been strong advocates for the rule of law, human rights, and constitutional freedoms. Your role is essential for our society’s progress,” he stated.

Mahama acknowledged the value of external perspectives, using a local proverb to illustrate his point: “If a person is charting a path, he may not realize it is crooked—it takes onlookers to point it out.”

His remarks reaffirm his administration’s commitment to transparency and dialogue, reinforcing the indispensable role of legal and civil society institutions in ensuring good governance.
