President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to elevate select nursing and midwifery colleges across Ghana to degree-awarding status as part of efforts to enhance healthcare education and professional standards.

Speaking during his Thank-You tour in the Ahafo Region on Saturday, May 31, Mahama reiterated his commitment to expanding access to quality tertiary education, particularly in regions that have long been underserved.

“We are dedicated to broadening tertiary education, especially in areas that have been left behind. As part of this agenda, the next NDC government will establish a university in the Ahafo Region focused on agriculture, natural resources, and health sciences,” Mahama declared.

He explained that transforming health training institutions into degree-granting colleges would significantly contribute to the professional growth of nurses and midwives, while also improving the overall efficiency and capacity of Ghana’s healthcare system.

In addition to upgrading academic status, Mahama promised the continued distribution of buses to both senior high schools and health training institutions to support transportation and academic activities nationwide.
