John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy will continue under his leadership, with a commitment to secure dedicated funding for its sustainability.
During a meeting with Christian leaders in Kumasi on November 11, Mahama addressed concerns surrounding the policy, refuting claims that he would cancel Free SHS if elected.
He characterized such allegations as a “political gimmick” aimed at misleading the public.
“Free SHS has come to stay,” Mahama asserted, emphasizing that while the program has successfully increased access to education, securing sustainable funding is crucial for its continued success.
“We must ensure it’s well-funded to enhance its quality and maintain its continuity,” he added.
Mahama’s statements underscore the NDC’s commitment to the Free SHS initiative, focusing on the need for consistent funding to address existing challenges.
This comes amid discussions where both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC have reiterated their support for the policy, albeit with different perspectives on how to improve its quality and implementation.
In addition to ensuring funding for Free SHS, Mahama stressed the importance of providing quality education, noting that a well-funded program would lead to better educational outcomes for Ghanaian students.
He reassured Ghanaians that under his leadership, Free SHS would not only be preserved but also strengthened to meet the needs of future generations.
