John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has committed to introducing sustainable mining practices to tackle environmental degradation caused by illegal mining activities.
Speaking to party supporters in Akrokkeri, Fomena Constituency, during the third day of his six-day campaign tour in the Ashanti Region, Mahama acknowledged the significant role of small-scale mining in the local economy.
He assured miners that his administration would implement policies that balance environmental protection with the improvement of mining livelihoods.
“I understand the importance of small-scale mining to the people of Adansi. The NDC will introduce policies to support miners while preserving the land for future generations,” Mahama said.
He emphasized the destructive impact of illegal mining (galamsey) on the nation’s natural resources and vowed to create systems that encourage responsible mining practices.
These measures would include land reclamation and the adoption of modern, environmentally-friendly techniques.
Mahama also urged voters to prioritize competence over political loyalty in the upcoming general elections, encouraging them to back a leader capable of addressing the nation’s critical challenges.
Given the mining activities in Fomena, Mahama’s commitment to environmental and economic sustainability resonated strongly with the local communities.
