Mahama Gives Chief Justice 10 Days to Defend Her Position Amid Removal Petitions
President sets urgent deadline for Chief Justice Torkonoo to respond to calls for her removal from office

- President Mahama demands a 10-day response from Chief Justice Torkonoo to address removal petitions
- Mahama expresses disappointment over the circulation of Torkonoo’s request letter before his review
- The response will determine if formal proceedings into the petitions will be initiated
President John Dramani Mahama has given Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo a 10-day window to respond to three petitions calling for her removal from office.
This follows the Chief Justice’s formal request for copies of the petitions filed against her. Mahama’s letter stresses the urgency for Torkonoo to submit her preliminary response within the given timeline to enable further consultations with the Council of State.
In his correspondence, Mahama expressed his displeasure over the premature circulation of Torkonoo’s March 27 letter, which had already appeared on social media before he could review it.
This letter was allegedly shared alongside others sent to key legal figures, including the President of the Supreme Court and the Ghana Bar Association.
The petitions, which have ignited intense legal and political discussions, question the Chief Justice’s fitness to continue in her role.
Although the specific allegations remain under wraps, the move indicates an impending high-stakes legal battle.
The response from Torkonoo within 10 days will be pivotal in determining whether formal proceedings will follow, potentially influencing her tenure.
