Mahama Assembles High-Powered Anti-Flood Taskforce to Tackle Accra’s Perennial Flooding
Government officials, security experts, and engineers unite to tackle Accra’s recurring flood crisis before the rainy season begins.

- Taskforce identifies heavily silted drains needing urgent attention
- Collaboration with the 48 Engineers Regiment to clear major drainage systems
- Enforcement of environmental regulations and infrastructure improvements planned
As the rainy season approaches, President John Mahama has formed a high-level Anti-Flood Taskforce to combat Accra’s persistent flooding issues.
Led by Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations) Stan Dogbe, the team has already conducted an aerial inspection of the city’s drainage systems to identify problem areas needing urgent attention.
The taskforce includes key government officials such as Marietta Brew, Legal Counsel to the President and Taskforce Secretary; Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, Minister for Water Resources, Works & Housing; Ahmed Ibrahim, Minister for Local Government; DCOP Abdul Osman Razak, National Security Coordinator; and the Deputy Director-General of NADMO.

During their aerial reconnaissance, they assessed critical drainage systems, pinpointing areas with heavily silted drains that require immediate desilting to prevent flooding.

“The President, deeply concerned about the recurring floods in Accra, has set up this taskforce to implement practical solutions to minimize the impact of the rains,” Stan Dogbe stated.
The taskforce, working closely with the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Local Government Ministry, will begin an immediate city-wide desilting exercise.

Water Resources Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei emphasized the urgency of clearing the Odaw River, one of the worst-affected areas, before the rainy season intensifies. “The Odaw is heavily silted, and we must take swift action to desilt it immediately,” he said.

Meanwhile, Local Government Minister Ahmed Ibrahim highlighted the role of human activities in worsening the flood crisis and stressed the need for stricter enforcement of environmental regulations.

Beyond immediate interventions, the taskforce aims to roll out long-term flood prevention strategies to safeguard lives and property, ensuring Accra’s resilience against future floods.
