President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a bold new plan to turn the Volta Lake into a central hub of economic activity under his flagship 24-Hour Economy initiative.
Dubbed the Volta Economic Corridor, this ambitious strategy is set to unleash the full agricultural, industrial, and environmental potential of the lake and its surrounding regions.
Speaking at the official launch of the programme in Accra on July 2, Mahama described the corridor as a revival of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s original vision—not just of hydroelectric power, but of a thriving agro-industrial economy rooted in the Volta Basin.
“Our flagship intervention is the Volta Economic Corridor—a transformational initiative designed to unlock the immense opportunities that lie within and around the Volta Lake,” Mahama said.
He lamented the decades-long neglect of Nkrumah’s broader vision, particularly the agribusiness and industrial potential of the Akosombo project. But he promised to rekindle that dream with concrete action.
“Today, we will recreate Kwame Nkrumah’s dream. Today, his dream comes alive again,” he declared.
Key initiatives under the 24-Hour Economy include:
-
Grow 24: Irrigation of over 2 million hectares of land to support intensive year-round agriculture.
-
Make 24: Establishment of agro-industrial parks specializing in textiles, pharmaceuticals, and food processing.
-
Show 24: Development of tourism clusters along the lake to stimulate cultural and hospitality-driven growth.
-
Connect 24: Transformation of the Volta Lake into a strategic transport corridor, enhancing connectivity between North and South, East and West.
The initiative aims not just to create jobs, but to position Ghana as a modern, self-sustaining economy driven by round-the-clock productivity.
