Mahama Alleges Government’s Deliberate Power Disruptions Ahead of 2024 Election
Former President accuses current government of concealing power outages and preparing to offload energy sector debt onto the next administration.
- Mahama accused the Akufo-Addo government of concealing the severity of the power crisis by not issuing a load-shedding timetable
- He attributed the current energy crisis to the shutdown of Sunon Asogli’s plant
- Mahama alleged that the government plans to leave a $2 billion debt in the energy sector
Former President and NDC Presidential Candidate, John Mahama, has accused the Akufo-Addo administration of deliberately downplaying the ongoing power crisis by withholding a load-shedding timetable, effectively concealing the severity of the nation’s electricity shortages.
Mahama claims that the recent exit of Sunon Asogli from the power supply sector, due to substantial unpaid debts owed by the government, has worsened the situation, leading to the return of “dumsor” (power outages).
He further alleged that the current administration is attempting to pass on an estimated $2 billion debt in the energy sector to a future NDC government, potentially crippling efforts to address the crisis.
Speaking to supporters in Ehiamankyene, Oti Region, Mahama criticized the government’s lack of transparency, noting that while his administration had introduced a load-shedding timetable to manage power shortages, the current government is avoiding similar measures to prevent political fallout.
Mahama also projected a decisive NDC victory in the upcoming December elections, aiming to secure a 300,000-vote margin in Greater Accra and increase their support in Volta and Oti regions.
