Lands Minister Pushes for Special Court to Tackle Galamsey

Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah pushes for a specialized court to expedite prosecutions and strengthen Ghana’s fight against illegal mining and deforestation.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has called for the creation of a fast-track court to expedite the prosecution of individuals involved in the destruction of Ghana’s forest reserves.

In an interview, Mr. Buah expressed confidence in the proposal, revealing that both the Attorney General and the Chief Justice have responded positively to the idea.

“I’m eager for the day when we can swiftly bring offenders to justice. I’ve had fruitful discussions with the Attorney General and the Chief Justice, and they have been very receptive to this initiative,” he stated.

Emphasizing the need for collaboration, the minister acknowledged that his ministry lacks direct enforcement powers and relies on security agencies for action.

He believes a specialized court will accelerate prosecutions and bolster the fight against illegal mining, logging, and other environmental crimes.

The proposal, if implemented, could mark a significant shift in Ghana’s battle against environmental degradation, ensuring quicker legal action against offenders.
