Kwesi Nyantakyi: Violence Chasing Sponsors Away from Ghana Football
Former GFA president links rising football violence to sponsor withdrawals

Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, has warned that hooliganism is eroding the commercial appeal of Ghana’s domestic football league, deterring potential sponsors.
Nyantakyi emphasized that ongoing fan unrest is one of the key factors pushing corporate sponsors away from the sport.
“When violence takes center stage in footballing matters, it drives away sponsors,” he stated. “Many companies don’t want to be associated with brands that are tainted by violence and illegality.”
The Ghana Premier League has been without a title sponsor since betPawa withdrew in November 2023, forcing clubs and the Ghana Football Association to seek alternative funding.
“Violence has no place at all in the game,” Nyantakyi stressed.
Scars of Hooliganism tells the untold stories of players, referees, and fans whose lives have been upended by football violence.
