After successfully leading Sudan to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Kwasi Appiah is now focused on a more ambitious goal—qualifying Sudan for their first-ever FIFA World Cup in 2026.

Currently topping a tough qualifying group that includes African heavyweights Senegal and DR Congo, Appiah is optimistic about his team’s chances.

He believes the key to success lies in instilling the right mindset in his players.

“I always tell my players, ‘How can you aim for the World Cup if you don’t set yourself at the level of teams like Spain, England, or Brazil?’” Appiah told BBC Africa.

Reflecting on his time with Sudan, Appiah also highlighted the power of football in fostering unity, especially after their 3-0 win over South Sudan in Juba. “It was incredible to see large sections of the crowd singing along to Sudan’s national anthem,” he said. “It was a moment that united both countries.”

With a strong sense of self-belief and determination, Appiah is more committed than ever to securing Sudan’s place at football’s grandest stage in 2026.
