Persistent Power Cuts Drive Kumasi Businesses to Generators

Kumasi, Ashanti Region – Frequent power outages in Kumasi, particularly within the Central Business District, are forcing businesses to rely heavily on generators.
For several weeks, the Ashanti region has experienced intermittent power cuts, disrupting operations and impacting residents.
Businesses such as banks, restaurants, and shops are increasingly dependent on generators to maintain operations, leading to a constant hum of generators across the city.
The outages have resulted in production disruptions and financial losses for many businesses, affecting the livelihoods of numerous people. Residents are also enduring discomfort due to the lack of power during the region’s hot climate.
Traders are expressing frustration with the increased cost of fuel needed to run generators. “I believe this is the return of dumsor because the use of generators is on the rise, and the cost of fuelling them isn’t easy. They should provide us with a timetable, that would be better,” one trader said.
Benjamin Antwi, PRO for ECG Ashanti West, apologized for the inconvenience and assured customers that measures are being taken to address the situation.
However, he also cited the persistent theft of ECG electrical installations as a contributing factor to the outages.
While power cuts are affecting other parts of Ghana, the Ashanti Region’s high power demand has made the situation particularly challenging.
