The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to the tune of GHS50 million, with two sureties required to be justified.
Following hours of interrogation at the EOCO headquarters in Accra starting on Tuesday, May 27, his legal counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed on Wednesday, May 28, that the bail had been granted.
In a significant show of solidarity, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central and one-time presidential hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, volunteered to serve as one of the sureties for Chairman Wontumi.
The move underscores growing support from within the NPP for the embattled regional chairman, whose arrest has been linked to alleged financial dealings with EXIM Bank.
Kwesi Opoku, the NPP Chairman for Tema West and a close associate of Agyapong, confirmed the gesture in an interview.
“I am confirming. The counsel, Appiah-Kubi, was telling him (Ken Agyapong) what the bail conditions are. So he offered himself that he was available because the Director of Special Prosecution here will examine whatever the bail conditions are… As we speak now, he is in there,” Opoku stated.
Chairman Wontumi’s arrest sparked immediate backlash within the NPP on Tuesday, with dozens of party supporters, including top executives, massing at EOCO’s premises in protest. Notable figures present included the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, and former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Titus Glover.
Despite the show of support and legal efforts, Wontumi’s legal team had not yet met the bail conditions as of Wednesday evening, though Appiah-Kubi expressed optimism that all requirements would be fulfilled by the end of the day.
