Mahama Will Cancel Free SHS, Don’t Vote for Him – University Lecturers Warn
University Lectures rally behind Bawumia, urge Ghanaians to protect the Free SHS policy
- University Lecturers for Free SHS accuse Mahama of opposing and undermining the Free SHS initiative
- The group supports Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, crediting him with ensuring the policy’s success since 2017
- Over 5.7 million students have benefited, and the lecturers urge voters to keep the NPP in power to sustain the program
A group of university lecturers has cautioned Ghanaians against voting for former President John Mahama, claiming his return to power could spell the end of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.
The group, calling themselves “University Lecturers for Free SHS,” believes Mahama’s past criticism of the initiative demonstrates his lack of commitment to its sustainability. They have urged the public to re-elect the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to protect and improve the policy.
Speaking at a press conference, Professor Isaac Boadi, the group’s convener, argued that Mahama’s track record on Free SHS, including his 2017 remarks labeling it a failure, reflects his opposition to the program.
“Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was instrumental in the design and implementation of this transformative policy. A Bawumia-led government will ensure its continuity and enhancement,” Professor Boadi stated, adding that over 5.7 million students have already benefited from the program since its launch in 2017.
The group also criticized Mahama’s initial opposition to Free SHS in 2016, when he proposed expanding school infrastructure before implementing free education. In contrast, the NPP prioritized immediate access to education for all.
The lecturers called on Ghanaians to reject what they termed Mahama’s “attempt to hoodwink voters” and instead vote to maintain the NPP in power to safeguard the future of Ghanaian students.
