JUST IN: Chairman Wontumi Granted Freedom as EOCO Bail Conditions Finally Met
Ashanti NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako secures release from EOCO custody after fulfilling GH₵50 million bail terms, as investigations into alleged financial crimes and organized syndicate links continue.

- Chairman Wontumi released after meeting GH₵50M bail set by EOCO.
- Bryan Acheampong served as surety, helping fulfill bail conditions.
- Investigations continue into alleged fraud, money laundering, and syndicate links.
Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been released by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after fulfilling his bail conditions.
His release was confirmed on the evening of Monday, June 2, by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua, who also praised Dr. Bryan Acheampong for stepping in as one of the sureties.
Wontumi had been in EOCO custody since his arrest on May 27 in connection with allegations of fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. Authorities also hinted at possible links to a global organised crime network.
Granted bail at GH₵50 million with two sureties to be justified, Wontumi’s legal team initially faced challenges in meeting the stringent conditions. However, by Friday, May 30, lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi confirmed that all documentation had been completed, thanks in large part to Bryan Acheampong’s support.
Although the bail was satisfied by Friday, Wontumi’s release was delayed due to a legal challenge seeking a review of the bail terms. This application, which was set to be heard on June 3, was ultimately withdrawn, clearing the path for his release.
His case attracted intense public and political interest, with numerous NPP MPs, party executives, and supporters decrying the bail conditions as politically driven.
As part of his bail terms, Chairman Wontumi is required to fully cooperate with ongoing investigations, including a separate probe by the Financial Intelligence Centre.
