Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has denied allegations that his government attempted to assassinate U.S. President-elect Donald Trump following two supposed assassination plots in 2024.

In an interview with NBC News broadcast on Tuesday, Pezeshkian firmly rejected the accusations, stating, “We have never attempted this [the assassination bid on Trump] to begin with and we never will.” He also reiterated Iran’s stance that its nuclear program is peaceful and warned against actions that could lead to war.

The interview was conducted less than a week before Trump’s inauguration, a time when his previous administration had imposed tough policies on Iran.

In November, the U.S. Department of Justice charged an Iranian individual in connection with an alleged plot by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to assassinate the Republican leader. Law enforcement successfully foiled the alleged plot before any harm was done.

During his election campaign last year, Trump suggested that Iran may have been involved in attempts to kill him.
