Interior Minister Mubarak Muntaka has announced a series of preventive actions by the Mahama administration in response to the heartbreaking drowning of seven Lawra Senior High School students.

The tragedy occurred on June 14, 2025, when members of the school’s cadet corps drowned in the Black Volta River near Dikpe in the Upper West Region.

Speaking in Parliament on July 2, Muntaka detailed coordinated efforts by the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) alongside key agencies to boost water safety and increase public education on the risks.

He outlined initiatives including regular awareness campaigns targeting canoe operators and riverside communities, maritime safety education for students and groups, the distribution of life jackets by the Ghana Maritime Authority, and ongoing monitoring to enforce safety regulations.

Muntaka also assured that REGSEC will oversee the proper upkeep of canoes and provide psychosocial support to Lawra SHS students, especially the three survivors affected by the tragedy.

He expressed hope that these measures would prevent future losses, honoring the deceased students as promising young leaders whose lives were tragically ended too soon.
