Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has responded to President John Dramani Mahama’s request to investigate election-related deaths from the 2020 and 2024 elections.
The IGP has established a specialized investigative team within the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters, with a clear timeline to complete their work and report findings back to him.
The team, which includes highly skilled and experienced officers of the Ghana Police Service, is chaired by Chief Superintendent Joseph Nanegbe.
The IGP assured the President that all necessary resources would be provided to ensure the successful completion of the investigation.
The investigative work will build on the progress made since Dr. Dampare assumed office in 2021. Notably, the IGP established the Cold Case Unit at the CID headquarters to continue investigating unresolved crimes.
This unit has made significant strides in investigating the deaths related to the 2020 elections, with some suspects already facing prosecution.
President Mahama had written to the IGP on January 10, 2025, formally directing the investigation into the deaths that occurred during the 2020 and 2024 elections.
