Former Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Kwakwa, has issued a stern warning to President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.

He has cautioned President Mahama and the NDC that if they release Chairman Wontumi back into the Ashanti Region, they will face the wrath of the Ashanti NPP.

Addressing the media at a press conference at Asokwa in Kumasi on Friday, Kwakwa criticized the NDC, suggesting that their alleged intentions to destabilize the NPP’s stronghold by detaining Wontumi would backfire.

“If they believe keeping Wontumi is weakening us in the Ashanti Region, they’re mistaken. Ashantis are not calm because we are powerless—we are calm because we are calculating. We’ve stayed silent for a few days, but we’re fully aware of what’s happening,” Kwakwa cautioned.

He went further to assert that should the NDC allow Wontumi to return to the region, the NPP would not take it lightly.

“If President Mahama and the NDC want to destroy him, go ahead. But the day he steps foot back in Ashanti, they should be ready—we’ll deal with them,” he threatened.

Kwakwa’s remarks come in the wake of Wontumi’s continued detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), following his arrest on May 27 in connection with an investigation into financial improprieties involving EXIMBANK.

EOCO has set bail conditions at GHS 50 million with two sureties, which Wontumi has yet to fulfill.
