Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Health Committee, says there’s strong hope that the nationwide strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) could be resolved by the end of the day.

Addressing Parliament on Thursday, June 12, Dr. Afriyie revealed that members of the Health Committee—representing both the Majority and Minority—held a constructive, bipartisan meeting focused on bringing an end to the strike.

“Our non-partisan committee held very productive discussions today, paving the way for a peaceful resolution. We’re optimistic that positive news will emerge before the day ends,” he stated.

Dr. Afriyie emphasized that while the grievances raised by the striking nurses and midwives are valid, he urged them to consider the broader impact on ordinary Ghanaians who are suffering due to the disruption in healthcare services.

“We fully acknowledge and support the nurses’ right to demand better conditions. However, we appeal to their compassion—Ghanaians are in distress, and we urge them to return to work as talks with government continue,” he said.

The GRNMA strike, which has brought health services nationwide to a halt, is in protest of unmet demands related to improved working conditions and previous agreements the government has yet to honor.
