Haiti’s Largest Hospital Under Attack: Two Journalists and One Other Killed by Gunmen
Violence erupts during a briefing for the reopening of the country’s largest public hospital
- Three people, including two journalists and a police officer, were killed
- The hospital, recaptured from violent gangs in July, remains a symbol of Haiti’s ongoing struggle with escalating gang violence
- Haiti's transitional government condemned the attack
At least three people were killed when armed men opened fire at the General Hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, during a briefing to announce the reopening of the country’s largest public hospital.
Among the victims were two journalists and a police officer, with many others left wounded in the attack on Tuesday.
The hospital, which had been seized and destroyed by violent gangs controlling the city, was recaptured by the government in July. The shooting took place as journalists awaited the arrival of the health minister.
In a video statement, Leslie Voltaire, head of Haiti’s presidential transitional council, extended condolences to the victims’ families, especially those of the Haiti National Police and journalists. He assured that the perpetrators would face consequences.
Despite efforts to address the crisis, including the formation of a new transitional government and the deployment of an international force, gang violence continues to ravage Haiti. With 85% of Port-au-Prince under gang control, the situation remains dire, as the country grapples with escalating violence that has left thousands dead.
