GRIDCo’s Bold Promise: No ‘Dumsor’ During WAPCo Maintenance

Energy sector leaders secure liquid fuel reserves to ensure uninterrupted power supply during critical repairs

Story Highlights
  • GRIDCo and ECG have stockpiled fuel to power critical plants during gas disruptions
  • Efforts led by the Ministry of Energy ensure seamless electricity supply.
  • Key plants like Tema and Asogli remain operational, avoiding outages

The Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo) has assured Ghanaians that it is fully prepared to prevent power outages, widely referred to as “dumsor,” during the rescheduled maintenance by the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo).

Scheduled to run from February 5 to March 2, 2025, the maintenance will not disrupt electricity supply, thanks to proactive measures.

In collaboration with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and under the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition’s leadership, GRIDCo has secured significant quantities of liquid fuel to power critical plants in Tema as a backup energy source.

Nana Amoasi VII, Executive Director of the Institute of Energy Security (IES), lauded the government’s efforts to ensure uninterrupted power supply. “The delay in the maintenance gave the government time to stockpile liquid fuel reserves. Even if gas flow is disrupted, the reserves will sustain the plants’ operations,” he told Citi Business News.

He emphasized that critical facilities like the Asogli and Tema power plants will remain operational, ensuring no loss in electricity generation capacity. “This approach guarantees a reliable power supply, avoiding public frustration and criticism,” Amoasi added.
