Govt Spends Over GH¢1m Per Day on Parliamentary Recall – Murtala Mohammed

Murtala Mohammed slams unnecessary parliamentary recalls for their financial strain on the state and disruption to MPs' schedules

Story Highlights
  • Each emergency parliamentary sitting costs Ghana at least GH¢1 million
  • NPP members failed to attend the recalled session, leaving only the NDC present
  • Murtala calls for more responsible governance and careful management of state resources

Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, has raised alarms over the hefty financial burden that emergency parliamentary sittings impose on the nation.

According to Murtala, each day Parliament is recalled costs Ghana at least GH¢1 million, a significant sum for a single day’s session.

His comments came after Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to adjourn Parliament on November 7, following a recall request from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Despite the urgency, most NPP members failed to attend, leaving only the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Chamber.

Murtala lambasted the NPP’s absence, calling it a flagrant waste of time and taxpayer money.

He criticized the mismanagement of state resources and the disruption to MPs’ schedules, noting that MPs were forced to cut short important commitments, like his own agricultural activities, to attend the session.

He urged all parties to consider the financial consequences of unnecessary recalls and act with greater fiscal responsibility.
