Commuters traveling from Ejisu Besiase to Tech Junction, through Suame to Buoho in Kumasi, are set to benefit from improved street lighting as the government steps in to repair and maintain broken streetlights along these routes.
The Ghana Highway Authority, under the Ministry of Roads and Highways, has signed a two-year contract with Prefos Limited to handle the project.
The initiative, which covers the Ejisu Besiase to KNUST route and the Suame to Buoho stretch, was announced by Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, during a visit to Prefos Limited’s operations center, where the company is preparing for the task.
During his visit, Dr. Amoakohene observed staff and management actively preparing streetlight bulbs and electrical cables for installation. He praised Prefos Limited for their ongoing efforts to ensure well-lit streets across the country.
The Minister also thanked the Minister of Roads and Highways for quickly addressing concerns about the poor condition of streetlights in parts of the region.
Dr. Amoakohene expressed concern over the growing problem of cable theft, which has hampered efforts to maintain streetlights. He issued a stern warning to those involved in the thefts, emphasizing that law enforcement agencies are closely monitoring the situation.
“Just a few days ago, thieves dismantled an entire transformer at Adum and stole the cables. Thanks to security efforts, we were able to track them down and make arrests. We’re not just fixing the lights, we’re also going to protect them. I’m calling on the public to help us keep the lights on during the night,” Dr. Amoakohene stated.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to road safety and infrastructure development, ensuring that all sectors of society benefit from projects like this.
In response, Prefos Limited’s management urged public support for the smooth execution of the project.
“We’ve noticed that when we repair the lights, people often steal the copper cables. To address this, we’re replacing the copper with LED lights. We urge the public to help protect the streetlights and ensure they remain intact,” they said.
With the project now underway, residents and commuters can look forward to better visibility and increased security along the affected routes.
