Govt Settles GH¢25m Debt to WAEC Amid Fears of WASSCE Results Delay – Dr. Apaak
Despite the payment, WAEC's financial struggles continue, with a significant debt still outstanding
- A cheque for GH¢25 million has been issued to WAEC to address part of its GH¢118 million debt
- Despite the payment, WAEC warns of potential delays in WASSCE results due to ongoing financial challenges
- Dr. Apaak, stress the need for the government to clear the full debt
The Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Education Committee, Dr. Clement Apaak, has revealed that the government has issued a GH¢25 million cheque to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
This payment comes in response to WAEC’s warning that delays in clearing the government’s GH¢118 million debt could hinder the timely release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.
Speaking in an interview, Dr. Apaak welcomed the move as a positive start but emphasized that it is insufficient to address WAEC’s financial burden.
“The GH¢25 million is just a fraction of the GH¢118 million debt owed. While this payment is a step in the right direction, it’s like a drop in the ocean,” he remarked.
WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, highlighted that the payment is crucial for settling technicians’ fees to repair faulty scanners needed for marking objective questions. However, he stressed that more funding is required to ensure smooth operations.
