In a bold move to prepare Ghana’s automotive sector for the impending automotive revolution, the government has launched an initiative to equip local auto mechanics with modern skills.
This effort, the Running Mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh aka Napo said aims to empower local mechanics to take advantage of the emerging opportunities in the automotive industry.
According to Dr. Napo, the government recognizes the significance of the automotive sector in driving economic growth and creating employment opportunities.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh made these assertions Thursday, 28th November, 2024 during an engagement with the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana National Association of Garages in Kumasi.
He stressed that with the advent of electric and hybrid vehicles, the industry is undergoing a significant transformation, and it is essential that local mechanics are equipped with the necessary skills to remain relevant.
“The government is committed to supporting the development of the automotive sector, and we believe that our local auto mechanics play a critical role in this process,” Dr. Napo stated. “By providing them with modern skills, we are empowering them to take advantage of the emerging opportunities in the industry and contribute to the growth of the economy.”
The training program, which is being implemented in collaboration with the Ghana Automobile Technicians Association (GATA), will focus on equipping local mechanics with the skills required to repair and maintain electric and hybrid vehicles.
The astute politician said the program will also cover areas such as vehicle diagnostics, electrical systems, and safety protocols.
Dr. Napo emphasized that the government is committed to creating an enabling environment that supports the growth and development of the automotive sector.
He noted that the government is working to establish a comprehensive policy framework that promotes the development of the industry and encourages investment in the sector.
The former Minister of Energy and Education also announced that the government is planning to establish a state-of-the-art training facility that will provide local mechanics with access to modern equipment and training facilities.
This facility, which is expected to be completed within the next two years, will serve as a hub for the training and development of local auto mechanics.
The Ghana Automobile Technicians Association (GATA) has welcomed the government’s initiative, stating that it will go a long way in enhancing the skills and competitiveness of local auto mechanics.
“We are excited about this initiative, and we believe that it will have a positive impact on the automotive sector,” said the President of GATA. “We are committed to working with the government to ensure that our members receive the training and support they need to succeed in the industry.”
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh continued that the government’s initiative to equip local auto mechanics with modern skills is a significant step towards positioning Ghana’s automotive sector for growth and development.
“As the industry continues to evolve, it is essential that local mechanics are equipped with the skills and knowledge required to remain competitive,” he affirmed.
