Gov’t Debt May Delay Release of 2024 WASSCE Results – WAEC Warns
Funding Shortfall Could Push Back Timelines for Marking and Result Processing
- WAEC has yet to receive the additional government funds promised for post-examination activities
- The lack of funds could delay the marking process and push back the release of WASSCE results
- WAEC has received only GH¢60.9 million of the GH¢186 million needed to complete the examination process
The release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results could be delayed due to an outstanding debt owed to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) by the government.
John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, revealed that although the council had initially planned to announce the results between December 9 and 15, financial constraints could push this timeline back.
He explained that while the government provided initial funding to conduct the exams, the promised additional funds for post-examination processes have not been received, putting the marking and processing stages at risk.
Despite several meetings and assurances from the government, WAEC has yet to receive the necessary funds to continue with the marking exercise.
Kapi emphasized that the council has only received about GH¢60.9 million out of the total GH¢186 million needed to complete the process. Without the additional funds, WAEC fears that the delay in result release could be inevitable.
“The lack of funds could jeopardize the marking exercise, and we may have to push back the release date,” Kapi stated.
