Twelve districts selected for pilot as part of plan to reduce poultry imports and boost youth employment

- Government to begin Nkoko Nkitinkiti poultry pilot in 12 districts of the Northern Region next month
- Project targets 55,000 households and aims to boost youth employment in agriculture
- Initiative seeks to cut Ghana’s reliance on imported chicken and eggs
The government will kick off a pilot version of its signature poultry project, Nkoko Nkitinkiti, in the Northern Region next month, according to the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku.
This initiative, part of the broader Feed Ghana strategy, is designed to cut down the nation’s reliance on imported poultry—especially chicken and eggs—while creating long-term job opportunities for the youth.
Twelve districts in the Northern Region have been selected to test-run the programme over the next four months. The aim is to gauge its effectiveness before scaling it up nationwide. Once fully operational, Nkoko Nkitinkiti is projected to positively impact at least 55,000 households and significantly boost youth engagement in agriculture.
Speaking in an interview, Minister Opoku confirmed that preparations are already underway, including the procurement of birds and battery cages for participating households.
“Even though we’re still finalising procurement, we’re moving forward with a limited-scale pilot next month to evaluate the logistics and outcomes,” the Minister explained. “The full national rollout should follow within two to three months.”
In a related development, Deputy Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Samson Ahi, revealed plans to launch a new agribusiness export programme. This initiative will focus on helping farmers and agro-entrepreneurs add value to their products and break into international markets.
“To succeed globally, we need to enhance how we present our goods,” said Ahi. “More farmers are beginning to package their produce professionally, and our upcoming policy will offer both support and education in value addition. We’re aiming for a launch next month.”
