The government has granted approval for public Senior High Schools (SHS) across Ghana to procure essential food items for students for a two-week period, from January 20 to February 3, 2025.

This directive, communicated through a letter from the Chief Director of the Ministry of Education, is an interim measure to address feeding challenges within public secondary schools.

To support this initiative, funds have been allocated to schools based on student enrollment and the approved daily feeding rates.

Boarding students will be provided meals at a rate of GHS 7.50 per day, while day students will receive meals at a rate of GHS 3.00 per day.

School heads are tasked with using these funds to procure necessary food items available locally.

For day schools, Heads of Schools are required to engage private caterers to provide meals at the approved rate to ensure all students are adequately fed.

Regional Directors will oversee compliance with public procurement and financial management regulations to ensure proper implementation of the initiative.

Public procurement guidelines have been issued to assist schools in following the appropriate procedures.

The Ministry of Education has called on Heads of Schools to ensure the smooth execution of the directive, which forms part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance the welfare of students and improve conditions in public secondary schools nationwide.
