Gold Board Controversy: Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu Questions Leadership Competence

The former Majority Leader questions whether Ghana’s Gold Board is being run by the right people as $279 million is allocated for its operations.

Former Majority Leader of Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has raised concerns over the expertise and qualifications of those appointed to manage the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD).

GOLDBOD was established to revamp Ghana’s gold industry, enhance foreign exchange earnings, and formalize small-scale mining. As part of this initiative, the government has allocated $279 million in the 2025 budget to facilitate gold purchases and exports, aiming to stabilize the market and curb illegal mining.

Speaking at the Kumasi Dialogue, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu cautioned that appointing individuals without the necessary expertise could undermine the board’s objectives.

He stressed the need for competent leadership, warning that poor decision-making at the top could have severe consequences for the country’s gold sector.
