Peter Martey Agbeko, Chair of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Elections Committee, has firmly pledged that the upcoming national and regional elections will be conducted with the utmost credibility, transparency, and fairness.

In a statement released on Tuesday, June 24, Mr. Agbeko assured GJA members and stakeholders that the committee—working closely with a technical advisor from the Electoral Commission of Ghana—is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to ensure a smooth electoral process that reflects democratic principles.

“With the support of my dedicated committee members and guidance from the Electoral Commission’s advisor, we are fully committed to organizing a free and fair election, adhering to internationally recognized best practices,” he affirmed.

Mr. Agbeko also addressed concerns over attempts to cast doubt on the process, emphasizing that while constructive criticism is welcomed, unsubstantiated claims only serve to erode public confidence.

“It’s disheartening when some individuals make baseless allegations that question the integrity of the process without offering any proof. Genuine concerns will always be considered and handled appropriately,” he noted.

On the topic of proxy voting—a point of recent contention—he clarified that it is a legitimate feature of modern elections and assured that robust measures are in place to prevent its misuse.

Reflecting on the committee’s performance under pressure, he highlighted their resilience, stating, “Despite unexpected challenges, we have conducted successful elections in the past. This speaks to our unwavering commitment.”

With election day approaching, Mr. Agbeko reiterated his intention to see the process through. “I am not stepping aside. I will oversee this election to the very end—professionally, faithfully, and with integrity.”

He announced a stakeholder meeting scheduled for later that evening, bringing together candidates, the Elections Committee, and the Electoral Commission’s advisor. The session is aimed at enhancing transparency and reinforcing unity ahead of the vote.

The GJA elections are set for Monday, June 30, 2025.
