Ghana has secured the 8th position among Africa’s top 10 manufacturing countries, as highlighted in a recent report by The African Exponent, a prominent business information source for entrepreneurs and investors on the continent.
The report specifically praises Ghana’s sustained emphasis on value-added manufacturing in the agriculture and cocoa sectors for transforming its industrial landscape. Additionally, the government’s “One District One Factory” (1D1F) initiative has been commended for fostering significant growth among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Established Ghanaian firms like Kasapreko and Fan Milk are also recognized for expanding the nation’s manufacturing footprint internationally.
Africa’s Manufacturing Leaders
Over the last decade, several African countries have emerged as powerhouses, hosting the continent’s largest manufacturing companies in terms of both scale and influence.
South Africa leads the pack in 1st place, maintaining its status as Africa’s most industrialized nation. Its advanced infrastructure, diversified industrial base, and global partnerships, particularly in the automotive and chemical sectors, solidify its position as the continent’s manufacturing giant in 2025. Key sectors include Automotive, Steel, Chemicals, and Food Processing.
Egypt comes in 2nd place, benefiting from a robust manufacturing ecosystem driven by exports to Europe and the Middle East. With a strong presence in chemicals, cement, and pharmaceuticals, Egypt has established itself as a continental manufacturing leader, supported by ongoing industrial reforms.
Nigeria ranks 3rd, home to some of Africa’s largest industrial conglomerates. The ambitious Dangote Refinery project and the rapid expansion of BUA Group exemplify Nigeria’s manufacturing aspirations, fueled by its large domestic market and policy reforms. The country’s leading manufacturing sectors include Cement, Consumer Goods, Food and Beverages, and Oil Refining, with major players like Dangote Group, BUA Group, Nestlé Nigeria, and Unilever Nigeria.
