Ghana has been ranked 7th globally among the largest recipients of funding from the World Bank, receiving a total of US$11.2 billion from the International Development Association (IDA) between 1961 and 2024.

The top three countries benefiting the most from IDA funding are Ethiopia (US$23.4 billion), Nigeria (US$18.8 billion), and Vietnam (US$18.5 billion). Ghana follows closely in seventh place, while China ranks eighth with US$10.2 billion in IDA funding.

Notably, eight of the top 10 largest recipients are from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Since its inception in 1960, the IDA has allocated over US$287 billion to support development in the world’s poorest nations, with a particular focus on reaching underserved and remote areas, especially across Africa.

Sub-Saharan African countries have received approximately 73% of all IDA disbursements, totaling over US$210 billion. The second-largest recipient region is East Asia, which has received US$41.8 billion, or 14.5% of total funding. Other regions include Europe and Central Asia (US$17.5 billion, 6.1%), Latin America and the Caribbean (US$11.2 billion, 3.9%), and the Middle East, which has received the least at US$7.1 billion, or 2.5% of total lending.
