Ghana Closes Embassy in Iran, Evacuates Citizens Amid Rising Conflict

Ghana has taken swift action to evacuate its citizens from Iran and shut down its embassy in Tehran as the conflict between Israel and Iran escalates.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the decision on Monday, June 16, 2025, through a Facebook post, stating that the Mahama administration’s move prioritizes the safety and well-being of Ghanaian nationals.
“In light of the worsening Iran-Israel conflict, the government has ordered the immediate evacuation of all Ghanaians residing in Iran,” he said.
The evacuation effort involves relocating Ghanaian diplomats, students, professionals, and other nationals through land borders. The embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect.
Minister Ablakwa also noted that the situation in Israel is under close monitoring, and further advisories will follow.
“In the meantime, we’ve scaled down operations at our embassy in Tel Aviv to the barest essentials. We urge all Ghanaians in Israel to remain in close contact with our consular office,” he added.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to the safety of its citizens, Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that “no effort will be spared in ensuring that Ghanaian lives are protected and kept out of danger.”
He also appealed for de-escalation in the region, urging both parties involved to seek diplomatic solutions and end hostilities.
