The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a warning about a fraudulent scheme in which scammers impersonate FDA officers to exploit food service businesses.

The fraudsters are reportedly contacting establishments, claiming to be investigating food poisoning cases, and pressuring the recipients to provide access to their WhatsApp accounts.

The aim is to steal sensitive information, such as client databases, or to manipulate the business systems. In some cases, the scammers also extort money under false pretenses.

In response, the FDA has clarified its official procedures, emphasizing that investigations related to food poisoning are handled through on-site inspections, not through phone calls.

The authority urged food vendors, restaurants, and other food service providers to be vigilant and cautious of any suspicious calls. Any such communications should be reported to the police or the nearest FDA regional office.

The FDA also reminded businesses that its officers are not authorized to collect payments.

For verification, establishments are encouraged to directly contact the FDA via its official numbers (0551112224/5) or email (fda@fda.gov.gh).
