The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the University of Ghana to slash its residential facility fees from GHC 3,000 to GHC 2,500 for both fresh and continuing students.

This decision emerged during a meeting on February 6, 2025, between the Minister, Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Amfo, and the Student Representative Council (SRC) at the Ministry in Accra.

“I have asked the Vice Chancellor to reduce the residential facility fees by 25 percent and to ensure the SRC is involved in future fee announcements,” the Minister said.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Amfo affirmed the University’s commitment to implementing the reduction and promised greater student involvement in future decisions.

“We have listened to the Minister and our students, and we agree to implement the 25 percent reduction across the board,” she stated.

SRC President Maradona Adjei Yeboah welcomed the relief but called for refunds for students who had already paid the full amount. “This reduction eases the burden on parents, but those who have already paid should receive refunds,” he insisted.

University officials revealed that about 80 percent of students had already made their residential payments, setting the stage for further discussions on refunds.
