Ecuador international Marco Angulo has sadly died at the age of 22, just over a month after suffering serious injuries in a car accident, as confirmed by his club, LDU Quito.
Angulo had been in the hospital since the incident on October 7 in Quito, where he reportedly underwent several surgeries and spent more than a week in intensive care. He passed away on Monday night.
In a heartfelt statement on Tuesday morning, LDU Quito expressed their deep sorrow, saying, “It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our beloved player Marco Angulo. Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones. His loss is an irreparable one that will forever remain in our hearts.”
His parent club, FC Cincinnati, also expressed their heartbreak, stating they were “devastated” by the news. After spending a season in the MLS, Angulo joined LDU Quito on loan in March 2024 with an option for a permanent transfer.
During his time at LDU, Angulo made 16 appearances, with his last match played on October 6, just a day before the tragic accident. He made his debut for the Ecuadorian national team in November 2022, earning three caps overall.
The Ecuadorian Football Association expressed its condolences, stating, “Marco was not just an exceptional player but also a wonderful teammate. His passing leaves a deep void in our hearts, especially for those of us who shared countless journeys and experiences with him. Rest in peace, Angulito.”
Additionally, reports indicate that fellow footballer Roberto Cabezas of Independiente del Valle and his friend Victor Carcopa also tragically lost their lives in the accident, while the condition of two other passengers remains unknown.
