ECG’s ‘No Money’ Excuse Falls Apart as It Awards New Contracts – Jinapor
Minister slams ECG for awarding new contracts despite over 1,300 containers stuck at the port, calling the move irrational and a sign of poor financial management.
Energy and Green Transition Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, has strongly criticized the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for awarding contracts for materials it has been unable to clear from the port.
He labeled the move irrational and a sign of poor procurement practices.
An investigative report revealed that despite financial struggles, ECG awarded contracts to two companies to clear the uncleared containers—one of which was pre-financed by the company. Shockingly, over 1,300 ECG-owned containers remain unaccounted for at the Tema Port. Adding to the controversy, ECG’s procurement directorate has been merged with its Housing and Estate unit, raising concerns over transparency and efficiency.
Speaking in an interview, Jinapor did not hold back in his criticism:
“ECG had about 1,000 containers they couldn’t clear due to lack of funds, yet they awarded new contracts for the same materials stuck at the port. How does that make sense?”
He further questioned ECG’s decision to restructure its procurement operations, warning that such a move undermines proper oversight and accountability.
