Dr. Bawumia Visits Chairman Wontumi at EOCO Headquarters, Holds 30-Minute Meeting
Former Vice President meets with Ashanti NPP Chairman amid EOCO investigation

- Dr. Bawumia visited Chairman Wontumi at EOCO headquarters on June 1, 2025
- The meeting lasted about 30 minutes behind closed doors
- Plans are underway to secure Wontumi’s release by Monday, June 2
Legal expert Krobea Kwabena Asante has revealed that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia visited the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters on June 1, 2025, to meet with Bernard Antwi Boasiako — the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), widely known as Chairman Wontumi.
Dr. Bawumia was accompanied by notable figures including Nana Akomea, former MP for Okaikwei South; Opare Ansah, former MP for Suhum; and Chairman Wontumi’s brother. The group held a private meeting with Wontumi lasting about 30 minutes.
Asante, in a Facebook update the same day, confirmed that efforts are underway to secure Wontumi’s release from EOCO custody by Monday, June 2. “It is assured that Chairman Wontumi will be out of EOCO custody on Monday,” he stated confidently.
Chairman Wontumi was initially summoned by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on May 27 over alleged illegal mining activities. He was subsequently arrested by EOCO on charges including suspected fraud, money laundering, and financial misconduct.
Though Wontumi was granted bail on May 28 with a GH₵50 million bond and two reliable sureties, his release was stalled due to legal complexities.
In protest, Minority MPs, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, demonstrated at EOCO’s Accra headquarters demanding Wontumi’s freedom, which disrupted traffic and attracted a strong police presence. The MPs accused the state apparatus of political persecution.
Chairman Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed on May 30 that all bail conditions had been met but acknowledged a remaining legal obstacle, expressing hope for its resolution by Monday.
