Former Auditor General of Ghana, Daniel Yaw Domelevo, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for directing his appointees to declare their assets.
However, he argued that the declaration should have been required before the appointees were sworn into office.

In an interview, Domelevo emphasized that asset declaration is a vital step in ensuring transparency and accountability in governance. His comments come in response to President Mahama’s directive issued on January 22, asking newly appointed ministers to declare their assets.

Domelevo, however, pointed out that the request, though praiseworthy, was delayed in relation to the legal requirement. He remarked, “If I were the president, thankfully I am not the president, but I would have told them, after going through vetting and all of that, go and declare your assets and liabilities before I swear you in.”

He argued that requiring asset declarations before the swearing-in ceremony would have sent a stronger message of commitment to good governance and would have set a higher standard for public officials.

Domelevo also stressed the need for stricter enforcement of asset declaration laws in Ghana.

He called on government institutions like the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to ensure that officials comply with these requirements and face consequences for non-compliance.

He concluded by urging President Mahama to institutionalize a policy that mandates asset declarations before swearing-in for all future appointments.

Domelevo stated, “This simple yet powerful measure can serve as a cornerstone in Ghana’s fight against corruption and set the tone for a more accountable government.”
