Devastating Floods in Kinshasa Leave Dozens Dead and Homes Destroyed
Torrential rains from the overflowing Ndjili River submerge streets, leaving thousands stranded and homes destroyed.

- At least 30 people dead as severe flooding overwhelms Kinshasa
- Widespread destruction of homes, infrastructure, and roads
- Human activity worsens flooding
Severe flooding in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has claimed the lives of at least 30 people, as torrential rains caused the Ndjili River to overflow.
The floods devastated homes, roads, and essential infrastructure, leaving many neighborhoods submerged.
Health Minister Patricien Gongo reported the provisional death toll, citing collapsing walls as the primary cause of fatalities.
The river burst its banks on Friday night, disrupting traffic and stranding motorists overnight. Local resident Patricia Mikonga described her harrowing experience of spending the night in her car due to the lack of safe parking.
The floods have caused widespread power outages and water shortages, as Kinshasa’s water infrastructure suffered severe damage. Governor Daniel Bumba Lubaki assured the public that water supply would be restored in a few days but also highlighted the dangers of illegal housing in flood-prone areas, warning of potential evictions.
Hydrologist Raphael Tshimanga Muamba pointed out that human activity has worsened the river’s condition, leading to more frequent and severe flooding.
This tragedy comes amid ongoing conflict in eastern DRC, with rebel attacks worsening the country’s instability.
