The death toll from Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza has surpassed 45,000, with the Ministry of Health in Gaza confirming the latest figures on December 16, 2024.
This grim milestone comes as the conflict enters its 15th month, marking another devastating chapter in the prolonged struggle. Among the deceased, 17,000 are children, and an additional 11,000 Palestinians are reported missing, likely trapped under rubble.
The health ministry described the situation in Gaza as unbearable, with daily losses mounting.
Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary, reporting from the central region of Deir el-Balah, emphasized the widespread destruction across Gaza. “Every aspect of life—schools, shelters, hospitals—has been targeted by Israeli forces,” she said. The relentless bombardment and siege have left Palestinians enduring immense hardship and trauma.
In northern Gaza, which has been subjected to even stricter restrictions, the situation is especially dire. Khoudary reported that air strikes, shelling, and drone attacks continue unabated, with emergency responders unable to reach the injured. “Rescue teams are unable to access many areas, and countless wounded Palestinians are left on the streets,” she added, referencing the horrific massacre at Khalil Oweida School in Beit Hanoon, where dozens of people were killed.
Monday morning’s violence also marked another blood-soaked day in Gaza, as Israeli military forces launched airstrikes on civilian areas, including the Nuseirat refugee camp. Tareq Abu Azzoum, reporting from central Gaza, described the chaotic scene, with explosions reverberating throughout the area.
As the death toll continues to rise and the humanitarian situation deteriorates, the people of Gaza endure an overwhelming and continuous cycle of violence, loss, and despair.
