The Ministry of the Interior has announced a curfew in Bawku, Upper East Region, starting Monday, October 28, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM each day, due to renewed and deadly clashes in the area.

This decision was made during an emergency meeting of the National Security Council, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in light of escalating violence linked to a longstanding chieftaincy dispute. Tensions surged following the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile, which has exacerbated conflicts in the region.

Recent violence has tragically claimed at least eight lives and resulted in numerous injuries, including attacks on travelers.

The Ministry of the Interior highlighted Abagre’s presence as a major threat to public safety, necessitating the curfew.

Residents are urged to adhere to the curfew and collaborate with security forces working to restore order.

Officials are prepared to enforce the curfew strictly, with legal actions anticipated against anyone who defies it. The government’s measures aim to stabilize Bawku and prevent further violence.
